The Indian Navy has acquired 3.03 lakh functions beneath the Agnipath navy recruitment scheme until Friday, the Defence Ministry stated on Saturday. The Indian Navy had on July 2 begun the recruitment course of beneath the scheme.
“A complete of three,03,328 functions acquired up to now for Agniveer within the Indian Navy…3,03,328 functions acquired as on July 22,” a Defence Ministry spokesperson tweeted. Below the Agnipath scheme, youths between the ages of 17-and-a-half and 21 years can be inducted for a four-year tenure, whereas 25 per cent of them will probably be subsequently inducted for normal service.
The scheme was unveiled on June 14, following which there have been violent protests in opposition to it in a number of states for almost per week and several other opposition events demanded its rollback. The federal government had on June 16 elevated the higher age restrict for recruitment beneath the scheme to 23 years from 21 for the 12 months 2022, and subsequently introduced a slew of placatory steps like a choice for Agniveers in central paramilitary forces and defence public sector undertakings upon their retirement.
