Defence minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday spoke to opposition leaders Mamata Banerjee, Mallikarjun Kharge and Akhilesh Yadav to evolve a consensus for the presidential candidate for the elections on July 18. Sources stated the senior BJP chief made calls to those leaders, on a day the opposition held a giant assembly to debate a joint candidate for the polls.
The BJP has authorised Singh and nationwide president JP Nadda to seek the advice of with different events for constructing consensus on a presidential candidate. The defence minister made calls to Kharge, Banerjee and Yadav apart from another leaders. Opposition leaders requested Singh about BJP-led NDA’s nominee for the presidential election, sources added.
Through the assembly convened by Banerjee, at the least two extra names emerged — Nationwide Convention( NC) supremo Farooq Abdullah and Gopalkrishna Gandhi, after Nationalist Congress Social gathering (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar declined to be a candidate. The election for the president might be held on July 18, whereas the nomination course of started from Wednesday. Incumbent Ram Nath Kovind’s time period ends on July 24.
