The Centre on Thursday informed the Rajya Sabha that it was not contemplating establishing of a media fee as advisable by a parliamentary panel to test “irregularities” in print, digital and digital platforms.
Noting that media was step by step shedding its “credibility and integrity”, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Info Expertise had in December 2021 advisable establishing of a ‘Media Council’ with statutory powers to test “irregularities” in print, digital and digital platforms.
Responding to a question raised within the Higher Home of Parliament, Union Info and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur mentioned the federal government repeatedly meets stakeholders for coverage formulation.
“The federal government repeatedly holds consultations with stakeholders and utilises information/data out there from numerous sources for coverage formulation, constructing methods, and so on. The establishing of a Media Fee will not be thought of mandatory at current,” Thakur mentioned in a written response.
The parliamentary committee, headed by senior Congress chief Shashi Tharoor, in its Twenty-Seventh Report had steered the creation of a media fee comprising consultants for wider consultations amongst the teams/stakeholders to evolve a consensus on establishing of Media Council.
The Committee had mentioned the fee will look into all of the advanced points in regards to the media and submit its report back to the Committee inside six months of its inception.
