India’s army unintentionally fired a missile into neighbouring Pakistan, New Delhi’s defence ministry mentioned on Friday, calling it “deeply regrettable”.
Hindu-majority India and Muslim Pakistan have fought three wars since independence from British colonial rule in 1947, two of them over the disputed territory of Kashmir.
Their shared border has a heavy army presence on either side, and there have been quite a few flare-ups between them, with tensions generally elevating fears of an atomic alternate.
“In the midst of a routine upkeep, a technical malfunction led to the unintended firing of a missile” on Wednesday, India’s defence ministry mentioned.
It didn’t specify the kind of missile, however mentioned it landed “in an space of Pakistan”.
The incident was “deeply regrettable”, it mentioned, including that it was “a matter of reduction that there was no lack of life because of the accident”.
The defence ministry declined to offer additional data to AFP.
