In a gathering with the Russian safety council, Vladimir Putin has requested for the separatist Donetsk and Luhansk “individuals’s republics” to be recognised as unbiased states.
Russia-backed rebels in these areas – positioned in Ukraine’s jap Donbas area – have been preventing the Ukrainian army since 2014 however Moscow has not formally recognised their self-declared republics.
Ukraine and the West worry that if this occurs, it could lead on Moscow to overtly ship army forces into the realm.
