A life-size statue of social reformer Periyar E.V. Ramasamy was broken after a container lorry rammed into it, on Kamaraj Salai, in Villupuram city on Wednesday at midnight. Ruling out the incident as an act of miscreants, police stated that it was an accident and the driving force of the lorry had been detained.
Police stated the statue was put in about 40 years in the past on the intersection of Kamaraj Salai within the city. The container lorry, carrying tyres from a manufacturing unit in Nettapakkam in Puducherry ,was going to Pune. The incident occurred when the lorry driver Mahendra Sable was reversing the automobile, and within the course of, rammed into the statue.
