Police on Sunday invoked the stringent Nationwide Safety Act (NSA) in opposition to 4 individuals out of ten arrested to date for allegedly elevating pro-Pakistan slogans throughout a Muharram occasion in Ujjain of Madhya Pradesh, a senior police officer stated.
The event comes a day after some right-wing organisations and spiritual leaders clad in saffron staged demonstrations, torched effigies of Pakistan, and demanded powerful motion by the police in opposition to these individuals who had raised pro-Pakistan slogans within the Geeta Colony space on the night time of August 19.
Ujjain superintendent of police Satyendra Shukla confirmed to PTI that the NSA has been invoked on 4 individuals who amongst others had allegedly shouted the slogans.
He refused to offer names of the accused.
The district collector invoked the NSA on 4 accused on the advice of the police, police sources stated.
Shukla stated police have arrested ten individuals for sloganeering to date.
Reacting to the incident on Friday, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had stated his authorities wouldn’t tolerate a ‘Taliban-like’ mindset.
When requested if the sloganeering was a response to the district administration’s choice to ban all public processions due to the coronavirus pandemic, Ujjain police had denied any such hyperlink.
Police had booked over a dozen individuals beneath sections 124 (a) (sedition) and 153 (provocation which may trigger riot) of the Indian Penal Code.
“We’ve recognized 16 individuals who raised the slogans. Efforts are on to determine others,” Shukla stated.
CM Chouhan had additionally stated the federal government has taken a troublesome stand vis-a-vis the Ujjain incident.
